Accomplishing the MISSION!
|
|
The ALA of Louisiana is your resource for information and data on lung diseases. Our focus is on education and prevention. Our primary program goals are asthma management, tobacco education and cessation, and public policy issues.
Our vision is of a world free of lung disease.
Our mission is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health through research, advocacy, education and prevention.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation funded by contributions from individuals, businesses, corporations and grants. We receive our support from the annual Christmas Seal Campaign, other direct mail opportunities, fee for service activities, memorials, and special events.
The ALA of Louisiana is the oldest voluntary health organization in Louisiana, founded in 1906. Formerly known as the Louisiana TB and Respiratory Disease Association, we are concerned with all lung diseases from asthma to pneumonia to tuberculosis.
As a volunteer driven, community based nonprofit, the Association is governed by a statewide Board of Directors of 25 people, all of whom are volunteers. Volunteers throughout all regions of Louisiana offer their time and talents to help coordinate and implement programs in local communities.

HOW we are accomplishing the mission
|
|
$291,000 awarded to cutting-edge research over the last 5 years.
Goal #1: Tobacco-related lung disease will be eliminated in future generation.
5,455 smokers received counseling to quit smoking. 129 smokers benefited from group counseling at one of our 16 clinics located throughout Louisiana. 30% of clinic participants had quit smoking by the end of the curriculum.
Goal #2: Asthma will no longer be a burden to patients and families, nor will it cause illness or death.
724 children with asthma received education and medical assistance from our interactive asthma programs.
Goal #3: The air we breathe will not cause or worsen lung disease.
5,200 victims from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita received lung function screenings and educational materials on mold, air pollution, and asthma through various disaster distribution centers.
Goal #4: The American Lung Association will monitor lung health and be the champion for those affected by lung disease.
478 elderly citizens and other high-risk individuals received flu shots.
73 individuals, mostly school teachers, attended our CPR classes and became certified in basic life support.
